Science Based Targets initiative validates CO2 emissions reduction targets

Rome, 22 July 2021 - The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Cementir’s CO2 emission reduction targets, judged to be consistent with the “well below 2°C” objective, pursuant to the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015.

This significant acknowledgement follows the recent upgrades to Cementir ESG ratings by the main international agencies and reaffirms the soundness of Cementir decarbonization process outlined in the Roadmap to 2030 and in the 2021 - 2023 Industrial Plan.

In particular, SBTi has validated Cementir Holding commitment to a 25% reduction of scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions per ton of cementitious products by 2030, from a 2020 baseline. The target boundary includes biogenic emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks . The objectives will be achieved through sustainability investments, product innovation, digitalization of industrial processes and operating efficiency improvement.

To date, 813 companies in the world have obtained the validation of their targets from SBTi, of which only 5 cement producers with a well-below 2°C target.

Francesco Caltagirone, Chairman and CEO noted: "The validation of our CO2 emissions reduction targets by Science Based Targets initiative is another important recognition of Cementir decarbonization path to 2030. Sustainable growth represents a commitment to all our stakeholders and at the same time it is a necessity for those who work in this sector”.

SBTi is a collaboration between CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), with the intention of guiding companies in the definition of ambitious targets for climate change mitigation to ensure that their strategy is consistent with scientific objectives.
